EMG/NCV
Electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction velocity (NCV) are electrical diagnostic tests that measure the electrical activity of muscles and nerves. These tests can be an important part of the medical evaluation of spine patients. In addition to back and neck pain, some patients with spinal problems report unexplained symptoms, numbness or tingling, muscle spasms, or weakness in the extremities, such as in one or both arms or legs.
Electromyography and nerve conduction studies help determine whether muscles, nerves, or both are involved. These tests can be run separately, but are typically run simultaneously. These procedures can be also known as Electrodiagnostic Study, EMG Test, Electromyogram, NCS, Nerve Conduction Velocity or NCV.
At Greater Houston and Greater Victoria Interventional Pain Management we offer electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction velocity (NCV) to diagnose and begin treatment for your conditions. Schedule an appointment today.

Which symptoms may I identify to need these procedures?
If you are experiencing symptoms of a muscle or nerve disorder, you might be the right person to access these procedures. Our doctors are prepared to assess and explain whether electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction velocity (NCV) will give you the answers that you need. These symptoms include:
- Muscle weakness
- Tingling sensation or numbness in arms, legs, hands, feet, and/or face
- Muscle cramps, spasms, and/or twitching
- Paralysis of any muscles

What do EMG and NCV determine?
- If the problem is related to muscles or nerves
- If we are in presence of nerve damage
- Which causes the nerve damage
- Whether the damaged nerves are responding to treatment (if the patient is already receiving treatment)
Which conditions can be diagnosed with EMG and NCV?
If your results were not normal, it may indicate a variety of different conditions. Depending on which muscles or nerves are affected, our doctors may indicate that it may be due to one of the following:
- Carpal tunnel syndrome, a condition that affects the nerves in the hand and arm. It is usually not serious, but can be painful.
- Herniated disc, a condition in which a part of the spine called the disc becomes damaged. This puts pressure on the spine, causing pain and numbness
- Guillain-Barré syndrome, an autoimmune disease that affects the nerves. It can cause numbness, tingling and paralysis. Most people recover from this condition after treatment
- Myasthenia gravis, a rare disorder that causes muscle fatigue and weakness.
- Muscular dystrophy, a hereditary disease that severely affects muscle structure and function.
- Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, an inherited disorder that causes nerve damage, especially in the arms and legs.
- Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive disease that attacks the nerve cells in your brain and spinal cord. It affects all the muscles you use to move, speak, eat and breathe.
At Greater Houston and Greater Victoria Interventional Pain Management we provide EMG/NCV studies. Our doctors are prepared to deliver the best care. Schedule an appointment on our Contact section, check the nearest clinic and get the best treatment today.
